What is a passive house?

What is lambda and what is its role in energy costs of buildings?

Lambda (λ) is thermal conductivity determining the value of insulating materials. The lower this coefficient, the better heat-insulating parameters of the material

. The lambda coefficient value of the construction material greatly influences the future costs of building heating. Typically used insulation has the λ coefficient at the level of 0.036-0.045 W/mK

. Reaching lower conductivity is a great challenge close cell foams are singled out by low thermal conductivity

(λ= 0.020 – 0.022 W/mK)

What is a thermal bridge

Thermal bridge is a place at points of connection of building construction elements where heat loss is increased, which results in worsening of whole building insulation and therefore increases energy costs.

Bridges can be found for example in places of misplacing insulation panels

(on walls, ceilings, roofs . They lead to wall moistness and even development of mould and mildew. Current regulations tighten requirements concerning the reduction of thermal bridges, which is possible thanks to spray insulation.

What is a passive house

Passive house is a better version of energy-efficient buildings. Innovativeness of passive housing consists of using solutions which aim at the lowest consumption of energy necessary to heat a building. Thanks to its high insulation parameters it is even possible to heat a building only with the energy of solar radiation.

The analytic hierarchy process (AHP)

, a widely used multi-criteria method, was applied to quantify the comparison.

The analysis of different construction types based on quantifying different criteria for passive houses was performed on a case study.

The AHP analysis revealed that the highest ranking criteria came into play here, notably well-being,

the psychological aspect, and functionality in the wood construction considered as one of the most suitable options for passive houses.
